Athens, cocktail with a view of the Parthenon

Here's our first barfly!
I flew to Athens with Danilo Lorenzi (an enthusiastic amateur mixologist) and went to A for Athens, an amazing venue: the view from its terrace takes your breath away without asking for permission.
We felt like gods on Mount Olympus, but without tripping over on a tunic.

From the terrace it seemed possible to touch the Acropolis and the imposing volume of the Parthenon: its millennian energy demands and deserves a courteous and respectful silence, while the frenzied coming and going of the human swarm of Monastiraki Square continued to agitate below us.

For a virtual tasting of A for Athens take a look below.

Produced during Bar Show 2012 (at this year's edition we of Spaghetti Junction will also be there), the video has as protagonists our Roman friends of the Jerry Thomas Project (http://www.thejerrythomasproject.it), one of the most important bars in the world.

The terrace on top of the building has an unrivalled view and the lighting, which is kindly provided by Mother Nature with the addition of a few of candles, helps guests in their relaxed conversations and encourages impromptu acquaintances.

At A for Athens the music blends well with the evening's atmosphere.
In the remaining part of the venue the lighting is warm and pleasant, while the floor staff, always attentive to greeting guests, rises to the occasion even on the busiest nights.

The list of drinks on offer is easy to consult. It's well balanced between classics and contemporary proposals with the addition of some house drinks, of a long spirits' list, of some "Afternoon Companions" and of the daily punch.

We tried a Mediterranean Glory Fizz, which we chose because its close ties with the territory and in particular, as the name suggests, to the Mediterranean basin.
Its creator is called Thodoris Pirillos, a mixologist that this year represented Greece in the world finals of the “World Class Bartender of the Year”, the most sought-after barman knockout competition worldwide.
The following video is an interview with Pirillos (provided if you understand Greek well): the explanation of the preparation of the drink starts at 9' 49".

The composition is created by using Mediterranean ingredients: the Cîroc grape vodka produced in France; Màstica, a liquor from the Island of Chios derived from mastic tree resin with its evergreen scent; the juice of Amalfi lemons that give the drink its acid edge, together with the pomegranate syrup from Istanbul, the distinctive bitterness of Punt e Mes and the light floral note of Lebanese rose water to complete it.

The drink has an interesting structure to the palate: the use of egg white gives it a silky feel, which results in an elegant soft finish.

Concluding our first leg of this barfly dedicated to Athens, we like to think of A for Athens as an inevitable destination for all enthusiasts.
