All the facets of Cannonau: the Italian Championship of Grenache
After the interesting experiment of the National Championship of Fiano wines we have decided to focus on another vine variety, which according to data of the International Grenache Competition  is the most widely planted vine variety in the world: Grenache.
There are different expressions of this variety in Italy. From a quantitative point of view the leader is Sardinia with its Cannonau, which accounts for 90% of the national production and is grown throughout the region. It is followed by Tai Rosso (formerly known as Tocai Rosso) of the Colli Berici, Granaccia from Liguria, Alicante from Tuscany and Bordò from the Marche.
We abandoned ourselves to this virtual tour of the parts of Italy where Grenache is grown and blind picked, among more than 150 wines we received from the aforementioned areas, the 32 wines that passed the eliminatory phases and that will battle it out in a one to one direct knockout. From the sixteenth-final, it will become an engaging competition focusing on this fantastic grape variety, capable of expressing at the same time such great differences and yet remaining so interesting.
The tasting commission features in alphabetical order:
·      Alessandro Bocchetti
·      Giorgio Melandri (only for the eliminating rounds)
·      Gianmarco Nulli Gennari
·      Stefano Ronconi
·      Paolo Trimani
·      Maurizio Valeriani
·      Giuseppe Carrus (only for the final phase)
·      Enzo Scivetti (only for the final phase)

We will soon publish the list of the wines that have made it into the final stages.
We wish the best of luck to all competing wines.
